Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
