The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
