EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
